As part of our day options program we have been learning how to plant, grow and harvest our very own seasonal fruits and vegetables. Everyone has been excited to take ownership and responsibility of the vegetable garden with a roster for garden maintenance including watering, weeding and fertilising. This activity is keeping everyone active and excited to be involved as they watch their gardens grow.
At Interchange Australia, we take a ‘garden to plate’ approach to all our cooking classes where we learn how to make healthy eating choices and learn to prepare beautiful dishes using our very own fresh produce. Everyone has the opportunity to take home any excess fresh produce with recipes to share at home.
A healthy diet helps pave the way to a healthy heart and blood vessels, strong bones and muscles, a sharp mind and so much more.
An important take home message is to focus on the types of foods you eat and your overall dietary pattern, instead of on individual nutrients such as fat, cholesterol and specific vitamins. There are no single nutrients or vitamins that can make you healthy, instead there is a short list of key food types that when consumed together dramatically increase your overall health.
