Interchange Australia Welcomes the National Disability Insurance Scheme to Our Region – Part 1, By Interchange Australia Consultant, Penny Anderson
The NDIS is now being rolled out in the South West Sydney (SWS) region, which is home to many people and families who receive support from Interchange Australia. The scheme, which began in SWS from 1st July 2016, now has participants who have been contacted by the NDIS, those whose plans have been approved and others who are starting to use the NDIS to fund their supports.
Over recent weeks, many people in our region have had their first contact with the NDIS. Some people have had a phone call or a letter from an NDIS representative. Some have progressed to an intake phone call to determine their eligibility and provide supporting information, whilst others have been contacted by the NDIS Local Area Coordinator (LAC) to make a time and place for their first planning meeting.
For some people, this process has been straightforward, whereas for others it has been a bit more complicated. Several people, however, have commented they are not clear about the process of becoming an NDIS participant and how to prepare, and have requested support from Interchange Australia. To reduce complexity and give people the information they need, the Interchange Australia Consultants have been working closely with our clients. The Consultants, who have a good working knowledge of the NDIS, have been providing clients with information and support, enabling them to navigate this new system more effectively. People working with our Consultants comment they feel better prepared and more confident about their first planning meeting once their pre-planning is done, their goals are clear and they understand what to expect during their first planning meeting. Furthermore, Interchange Australia Consultants are able to provide support during the actual planning meeting, if required. You can call us on 1300 112 334 or visit our website: www.interchangeau.org
Supporting our clients to become NDIS participants, providing them with information about navigating the new system and providing assistance with supports is core to the work Interchange Australia is doing with prospective NDIS participants. Please do not hesitate to contact one of our Consultants if you require information, support or other details about the NDIS at this stage of the rollout of the scheme.
