James: Creating Social Connections – By Interchange Australia Consultant, Katie Dobie
James was referred to Interchange Australia by a private hospital over three years ago.
As a child, James sustained a brain injury in a speedboat accident that also severely injured his hip, requiring a hip replacement. When James was in his late teens he was involved in a major car accident which compounded his brain injury. Over time, James’ need for support to remain living independently has increased, and he now receives a wide range of support services, including supported independent living, improved daily living skills, social and community participation, house maintenance and coordination of supports.
James particularly enjoys the social connection he makes with other people. “I don’t engage on my own,” James says. “Interchange Australia gives me the push I need. I enjoy all the peer support outings as I am part of a group and get to meet other people and I enjoy seeing all the happy faces.”
Some of James’ favourite outings have been to Monster Jam in Sydney and the dolphin cruise at Jervis Bay. He also recently visited Parliament House in the ACT accompanied by a Support Worker.
In addition to the weekend activities and outings, James has also been part of Interchange Australia’s Stage Fright Players drama group. The Stage Fright Players rehearse on a weekly basis and perform an original production each year. Participants in the Stage Fright Players are involved in all aspects of the production, including script writing, prop and costume creation and lighting and sound production. James performed in the productions of ‘A Cracking Christmas Cruise’ and ‘Don’t Rock the Boat.’ This was a fantastic achievement for James and he enjoyed his time immensely. “I needed to do something and I was happy to try drama out. I was very proud of the group and being involved in the production,” James exclaimed.
James is looking forward to exploring more opportunities and experiences with Interchange Australia. “The service is great and well organised and I wouldn’t have had these experiences without Interchange Australia. It is a dream come true.”
Congratulations James on your dedication to connecting with people and experiencing all there is on offer.
