24 September 2019
What an evening! Rockcan 2019 exceeded its all-time attendance record and every performer put on a spectacular performance. The Interchange Australia music program continues to evolve, and for the first time, we had three bands comprised of Interchange Australia clients.
Strawberry Jam hit the stage first, our three piece girl band who performed outstandingly. Tracey-Lee, Heidi and Donna, take a bow! The girls have rehearsed right throughout the year and their dedication and commitment to leaning the lyrics and dance moves to go with the tracks had the crowd on the dancefloor and calling for more! Well done ladies, we look forward to you playing many more gigs throughout the year. Heidi, your solo performance of ‘Faded’ was brilliant too!
Our new band from Narellan, Under the Radar, were next on stage. Having worked with our very talented musician and support worker, Andy, Under the Radar performed some classic and contemporary rock numbers much to the delight of the crowd in attendance. This band has a very promising future and we look forward to seeing them perform more in the future.
Solo artist Dan Demos had the crowd rocking along to his blues inspired set next. Dan belted out a number of original tracks and some well-known covers, all with his own artistic twist. It was a spectacular performance. Dan is a very talented performer and has a passion for making music accessible to everyone in the community. Check out Dan’s catalogue on SoundCloud.
A special guest performance followed Dan Demos’ set. Thomas, a long term member of The Hidden Wonders hit the stage to perform two tracks, including a cover of The Living End’s Prisoner of Society! Thomas has been a foundation member of The Hidden Wonders and is now learning to perform solo and to learn bass guitar.
Knowing Bowen, a four piece rock band from south-west Sydney were next on stage, featuring a set comprised of 100% original tracks. This band is on its way to great things and will be releasing a new single very soon. Check out their facebook page for full details.
To round off the evening, The Hidden Wonders took to the stage at RockCan for the eleventh year. It has become a cliché, but this band continues to improve each and every year. The band rehearses every week at Welby Hall under the guidance of support workers and musicians, Tim and Ben, and they perform at multiple gigs throughout the year. Each member’s dedication and commitment to expanding their repertoire and performance skills is inspiring. Their set included a number of favourite covers but also some new tracks with their own creative interpretation. Congratulations guys on continuing to set the bar higher! Well done Tim and Ben for continuing to enhance the skill set of each member.
RockCan 2019 concluded with an encore performance featuring all of the performers on the night with their rendition of Slow Blues in C featuring orginal lyrics. This performance had the large crowd asking for more, well after the house lights were switched on.
Special thanks to all of the performers at RockCan 2019. Our guest bands appear on a voluntary basis and they add so much to the event. Thank you very much to Knowing Bowen and Dan Demos.
DJ Jam, Julie-Anne, our very talented sound guru, thank you for DJ’ing between sets. You had every up and dancing.
To Harrison, our newest music program member, you did a phenomenal job of MCing RockCan. Your knowledge of the bands and the songs they were performing were second to none! We are very happy to have you as the official Interchange Australia MC for all of our events.
RockCan would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, Moss Vale Motor Group, Southern Highlands Taxis, The Mill Café Bowral, 92.5FM, Mittagong RSL Club and Luminous Entertainment. Thank you so much for your generous contribution to this inclusive community music event.
Finally, to The Hidden Wonders, Strawberry Jam and Under the Radar, we are very proud of your performances and look forward to seeing you perform at many gigs in the future.
To our support staff and volunteers, your contribution to the success of this event cannot be overstated. Thank you very much for all your hard work that has contributed to the success of RockCan 2019.
