“I knew I wanted to be a part of something that mattered and help make a difference to people’s lives.”

I knew I wanted to be a part of something that mattered and help make a difference to people’s lives.
There aren’t many places in Sydney where you can finish work and head to a beautiful beach, just to relax or swim or fish. What’s not to love about the Shoalhaven. I love how tight knit the communities are, living down here is just a more relaxed lifestyle, I don’t feel like I’m running around like a headless chicken. I feel like when I go out into the community and shop for things whether they be groceries, or the local markets held weekly, fortnightly or monthly it makes me feel like I’m contributing back into the community.
My name is Courtney and I am a Support Worker with Interchange in the Shoalhaven. I am a mum of two very energetic fur babies, whom I treat like my real children. I am extremely passionate about animals. Living in the Shoalhaven is honestly a dream for me, living so close to so many beaches, farms, shops and holiday destinations makes living in the area a new adventure every day. I have a fair few of my family members living in the Shoalhaven with me which makes it feel like home. The only family I can think of that don’t live nearby are my parents, and in the current climate makes things a bit hard as I miss them dearly.
I always knew I wanted to help people, originally, I thought that meant children, so for a while I used to work in childcare. Sadly, that didn’t work out. Which is why a friend of mine suggested that I try disability services. Before I worked at Interchange, I was already in a support worker role up in Sydney. I supported many people out in the community as well as in the home.
I applied to work at Interchange because I knew I was ready to make a change in my life. I was ready to move on from Sydney and really loved the coastal life. I knew I wanted to work for Interchange specifically as I had heard so many great things about the company. They have a fantastic reputation and were highly sought after. I knew I wanted to be a part of something that mattered and help make a difference to people’s lives.
For me personally, I find talking to people very easy, I have no issues with communication which made this role so perfect for me. I am a very outgoing person so placing me with participants who weren’t as confident really encouraged them to come out of their shell and gain more confidence. I thoroughly enjoy watching the joy come from participants faces when I arrive at their homes to take them out into the community. I enjoy the friendships and the trust I build with the families. I also love that not every job is the same and some days you will find it super challenging and other days are honestly a breeze.
You probably never hear many people say this, but I actually LOVE my job!
