Interchange Australia Coordinators Judith, Felicity and Angela share a snapshot of their working day under lockdown …
“Traffic is definitely much lighter,” says Felicity, as she arrives at the campus in Narellan, ready for another day as an essential worker “and parking is a breeze.” Neither issue has ever really been a problem for Judy and Ange. Living in a more rural setting has its advantages but all three Coordinators are already thinking about the day ahead, the program they will be running, the clients and their teams for the day.
Once on the floor, it’s business as usual until the clients begin to arrive. These days, team meetings are slightly shorter and daily cleaning slightly longer. But as the clients trickle in, the changes become apparent. Parents and carers are not allowed past the front door, and immediately upon arrival, clients are whisked away to wash their hands. The questions to the clients and their families are now second nature: “Are you suffering from any cold/flu like symptoms?” or “Is anyone in your household suffering from cold or flu-like symptoms?”
As the day progresses, social distancing and regular cleaning plays a critical part in the well thought-out activities and programs. “We are better to embrace things,” says Judy. “We are here to provide a service and foster a positive environment for the clients.”
The Day Option program has continued to run throughout the pandemic, however, Interchange Australia has taken certain classes online, using Zoom as a webinar platform for both band and drama classes, with further programs to follow. Feedback has so far been extremely positive, with families incredibly grateful of the innovative approach.
Back at the campuses, the day draws to a close for the three Coordinators around 3:00pm. There’s no doubt that this new world has brought more questions than answers so far, but as Angela points out “if you don’t get asked questions then you don’t ever look for answers.”
