Interchange Australia’s Day Options program has been specifically designed to equip participants with the skills necessary to maximise their independence. Core subjects are built around Life & Learning, Education, Health & Wellness as well as Socialising & Leisure.
Throughout these subjects in February there has been a lot of focus around improving health and wellbeing, from eating well, regular exercise to menu planning and cooking. Participants have learnt about food pyramids or healthy eating food plates (to get a better perspective), healthy proportions along with the benefits to your physical and mental health directly attributed to a properly balanced diet.
To add a little fun to the topic, all of Interchange Australia’s Day Options houses competed in a Healthy Eating Challenge. The challenge went for the entire month and was embraced by everyone involved, including staff! The purpose of this challenge was primarily to encourage healthy eating amongst all the participants and provide some hands-on practical experience with the topic.
The challenge ran for the entire month with the aim not only to establish habits for making good choices when it comes to meals, but also so that participants could feel the full benefits of a healthy diet when maintained.
Points were tallied at the end of February and the winning houses in each region where our Day Options program is run will be cooked a magnificent 3-course lunch by the runner-ups, with both the winners and runner-ups enjoying the meal prepared together.
For the Southern Highlands houses, Travis House participants in Bowral won the challenge with the runner-ups being Springett House. In Narellan, we had Somerset House take the top prize with Kookaburra House the runner-ups. Both winning houses will be prepared their delicious lunch by the runner-ups on Monday, 9 March.
Huge congratulations to everyone who took part in the Healthy Eating Challenge, you all did marvellously well!
