Top 3 Questions
19/10/2021
The top 3 most asked questions in relation to the COVID-19 vaccine and testing, answered by Dr Lucas de Toca, COVID-19 Primary Care Response First Assistant Secretary
1. What is a rapid antigen test and how accurate are they?
2. I’m on medication – will the COVID-19 vaccine affect this?
3. How do I know if the COVID-19 vaccine has worked?
1. What is a rapid antigen test and how accurate are they?
A rapid antigen test is a test that can give results of whether someone has presence of the virus that causes COVID in a short period of time, as the name says.
It is a test that functions and is primarily useful for people who don’t have symptoms and the basics of how it is operating is not that dissimilar to the swab that you get for a PCR, or the standard laboratory test that you get for COVID.
So it is a nasal swab using a cotton bud, like for other tests, and then that is inserted into a chemical solution that is then placed into the device that performs the rapid antigen test, and you can get a result within 15-20 minutes, which is really convenient.
Unlike the standard laboratory test, the PCR or polymerase chain reaction test, it doesn’t look for the genetic material of the virus, but it looks for a number of key components of the virus. So as a result of that, it is less sensitive than the standard test. It has a high chance of missing an infection than the standard PCR test does.
2. I’m on medication – will the COVID-19 vaccine affect this?
The key message here is that generally, COVID-19 vaccines will not interfere with medication, and there are no known interactions with COVID-19 vaccines and any prescription or over-the-counter drug. However, regardless of this, as always, it is really important that you talk to your health professional, your regular doctor, and your immunisation provider, the clinician that is administering the vaccine to you, and disclose any medication that you are on, including over the counter products or vitamin supplements, things that you take out of habit, so that they can consider that in the context of your vaccination.
3. How do I know if the COVID-19 vaccine has worked?
The broad answer is that we don’t have an immediate way to tell at an individual level whether the vaccine has worked or not, but the vaccines are incredibly effective, they overwhelmingly work and have a significant impact, an almost 10-time reduction of the chance that you would get severe disease, hospitalisation or death from COVID-19. Many people, and it’s very common, have some side effects, mild or moderate side-effects from the vaccines. Feeling a little bit tired, pain at the injection site, a short-lived fever or a bit of a temp, they are the kind of side-effects that some people often get with flu vaccine or other vaccines, and they seem to be common with COVID-19 vaccines.

NSW freedoms never tasted so sweet
11/10/2021
Hairdresser scissors are snipping, beers are chilling and cash registers ringing across NSW after the first stage of COVID-19 restrictions were eased across the State for the fully vaccinated.
Premier Dominic Perrottet said today’s milestone was only possible thanks to the efforts of so many people embracing the public health messages.
“The people of NSW have earned this moment setting a cracking pace in getting the jab to protect our communities and businesses who have had such a tough time these past few months,” Mr Perrottet said.
“Today is just a taste of the freedoms to come with the State on track to pass the 80 per cent double vaccination mark within weeks, and if we keep on going, we’ll ensure lockdowns become a thing of the past.”
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW Paul Toole said the changes would be welcomed from Bondi to Broken Hill.
“So many people like me are keen to get back to the pub, enjoy a meal at their local cafe and inject some money back into regional economies,” Mr Toole said.
“It won’t be long before we see the bush buzzing again and the main streets of regional towns packed with activity as businesses re-open and restrictions start to ease.”
Treasurer Matt Kean said the Roadmap would kick-start the State’s economic recovery.

NSW on the road to reopening
07/10/2021
NSW will take its first steps towards reopening as the State passes the 70% double vaccination target.
With the first vaccination milestone being reached, the NSW Government is also easing a number of restrictions as part of the Reopening NSW roadmap, which will allow fully vaccinated adults to enjoy more freedoms from next Monday, October 11.
The changes to the 70% roadmap will allow up to 10 visitors (not counting children 12 and under) to a home (previously five), lift the cap on outdoor gatherings to 30 people (previously 20), and increase the cap for weddings and funerals to 100 people (previously 50).
Indoor pools will also be re-opened for swimming lessons, squad training, lap swimming, and rehab activities.
On the Monday after the State clears the 80% double vaccination hurdle further restrictions will be relaxed, with people able to have up to 20 visitors (excluding children 12 and under) to a home (previously 10), and up to 50 people will be allowed to gather outdoors (previously 20).
Up to 3,000 people will be allowed to attend controlled and ticketed outdoor events (previously 500), nightclubs will be permitted to reopen for seated drinking only (no dancing), and masks will no longer be required in office buildings. All roadmap freedoms at 70% and 80% will continue to be for fully vaccinated people only.
All school students will also now return to on site learning with a range of COVID-safe measures in place by October 25, with the second and third stages of the return to school plan now combined. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 12 students will still return to face-to-face learning on October 18, with all other years now returning one week later on October 25.

Return to Face-to-Face Group Activities
29/09/2021
We are excited to announce that here at Interchange Australia we are in preparation for the return to face-to-face group activities and supports in the safest way possible. The NSW Government has announced freedoms for fully vaccinated people and NSW will start to reopen once we reach the 70% double vaccination target.
As such, it will now be a requirement for all participants who wish to attend group activities across the Interchange Australia network to be fully vaccinated, unless you have a medical exemption. This is a requirement across all group activities (Day Options, Short Term Accommodation and Peer Support, including Band and Drama) and all geographical areas.
You will also be required to provide Interchange Australia with proof of vaccination. If you are unable to be vaccinated, you will require an exemption in the form of a COVID-19 Vaccine Medical Contraindication Certificate signed by your doctor.
Masks will remain mandatory for all indoor venues for all participants over the age of 12 years, if you cannot wear a face mask because of a disability, physical or mental health illness or condition, you must carry either a medical certificate or letter signed by a registered health practitioner (such as a doctor).
The health and safety of all Interchange Australia participants and staff is our number one priority and we thank you for understanding.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your Account Manager or call Interchange Australia on 1300 112 334.

Roadmap to Freedom Unveiled for the Fully Vaccinated
10/09/2021
Stay-at-home orders for adults who have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will be lifted from the Monday after NSW passes the 70 per cent double vaccination target, under the roadmap to freedom released today.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said we are well on the way to hitting the 70 per cent double dose milestone which will allow the state to open up for those who have received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
“I cannot stress enough how important it is for people to get vaccinated – if you have not had both doses of the vaccine by the time we hit the 70 per cent milestone, you will not be able to take advantage of these freedoms,” Ms Berejiklian said.
Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the NSW Government has worked with industry to design this road map, which is our biggest incentive to get vaccinated, to reach the 70 per cent target as soon as possible.
“Our roadmap outlines the freedoms that twice vaccinated people will enjoy once we reach 70 per cent double dose which means a meal with loved ones or a drink with friends is just around the corner,” Mr Barilaro said.
Only fully vaccinated people and those with medical exemptions will have access to the freedoms allowed under the Reopening NSW roadmap.

What is the Delta Variant?
08/09/2021
The current NSW outbreak is due to the delta variant of the COVD-19 virus, 100% of cases in NSW right now are the delta variant.
- The Delta variant is estimated to spread more than twice as easily as the origingal virus, which puts your family and friends at a greater risk if you’re infected. The Delta variant can also cause more severe illness.
- The risk of needing hospital care for people infected with the Delta variant is around double that of those infected with the Alpha variant.
- Compared to other variants, people infected with the Delta variant are more likely to be admitted to hospital, including intensive care.
