Mary-Anne’s Journey with Cerebral Palsy
Mary-Anne has Cerebral Palsy, and commenced services with Interchange Australia early in 2014.
Prior to becoming a client of Interchange Australia Mary-Anne worked at Welby Garden Centre four days per week, Mary-Anne rarely socialised outside of work aside from with her family and lived a very solitary life.
Since commencing with Interchange Australia Mary-Anne has joined many of the activities on offer from peer support through to a variety of the day options programs.
Mary-Anne’s favourite activities are the ones where she is able to meet and socialise with other people who have similar interests. Some of Mary-Anne’s peer support activities include coastal walks & circus workshops where she can build core strength, dinner groups where she gets the opportunity to catch up with all of her friends and really enjoyed the Disney On Ice outing.
Mary-Anne attends Day Programs at Springett and Travis House 3 days per week also Respite on some weekends, some of her favourite activities in these programs include the Cheftastics cooking class, 2Fit2Quit where they participate a variety of health and fitness activities from Zumba to swimming, dance and group sports.
In Mary-Anne’s downtime, which there does not seem to be much of, Mary-Anne will receive one on one support to attend and participate in exercise physiology classes at ONTRAC, swimming at the Aquatic Centre in Moss Vale and trips to Macarthur Square and Mount Annan Botanical Gardens, Mary-Anne also fits in the occasional movie in when she has time.
Mary-Anne has achieved both of her goals to get fit, with all of the hard work she has put in at ONTRAC she was able to stand up for the first time in 2016. Mary-Anne developed a social network and as made many wonderful long lasting friendships throughout the years, May-Anne has said that she is “extremely grateful to Interchange Australia for all of the opportunities they have provided to her in helping her reach her goals” over the past six years as well as setting many new ones to achieve as well.
