It really can be a life changing experience
Why do we show up to work? What makes us come back, even on the hard days? If you ask other support workers these questions, the answers you get are not “I do it for the money” or “It’s just easy and convenient for now”. Instead, what you hear is “I love getting to make a difference in people’s lives” and “I just love my clients” and “helping people gives me purpose”. Being a support worker can be one of the most fulfilling jobs you can do. It really can be a life changing experience, because you get to work with some really special people, all whilst tangibly contributing to the community you live in.
To the right person, support work can be the dream job. It can undoubtedly be challenging at times as we deal with difficult circumstances, challenging behaviours and complex care needs. But being equipped with good training, professionalism and the appropriate tools to handle situations as they arise is part of the professional development that Interchange is passionate about providing. Support work is one of the most rewarding things you can do. It’s about those moments where you see a client discover a new passion; or when you see that even just from providing someone with some domestic assistance you’ve been able to ease the stress that comes with ageing. It’s having fun while you get to give people the opportunity to try new things, and seeing them experience real joy.
Our industry in Australia is crying out for people. But not just anyone, the right kind of people.
If you are a current Interchange staff member, look at how you can increase your hours in a healthy way, that benefits you, your family and the community. If you know someone, bring them onboard by speaking to Human Resources about them, and if we hire them we’ll reward you with $100 once they pass their probation period.
