What ever life deals you with, no matter your age – if you work hard for what you want to achieve, you can do it!
By Interchange Australia Marketing Coordinator Kelly Taylor.
Ian Wood suddenly became vision impaired at the age of 81 back in December 2022 requiring the assistance of support staff to assist him in day-to-day activities where he was once independent. Ian currently receives Social Support services from Interchange Australia which he uses to maintain his independence with physical activity by going for walks with support worker Cherie.
Ian wanted to contribute to something he felt passionate about and recently participated in the Dementia Memory Walk and Jog in Bowral (February 2024). Ian who walked in honour of his Mum Marjorie was supported by daughter Phillippa, and raised funds for Dementia Australia. Maria Lasic (Ian’s Interchange Australia Support at Home Coordinator) was so inspired by Ian’s determination that she too signed up and participated with her mother!
Ian, the only Anthem Care resident walking with the team, was incredibly delighted to complete the 4km walk in just 1hr and 10min, raising $1137 to support Australians impacted by dementia. The money raised will help support the work of Dementia Australia to provide vital support services like counselling, support groups, education, and research to help find a cure. He brought a smile to the other 200+ participants by wearing a clown suit!
Ian has spent weeks training with his Interchange Australia support worker Cherie, building up his stamina for the walk. Proving that his age and loss of vision have no bearing on his determination or his ability to achieve what ever he wants to do! Ian enjoys his chats and an occasional song with Cherie as well as their walks. Although he suddenly went blind in Dec 2022 at the age of 81, Ian likes to keep active and think positively. He is grateful for the help the Interchange staff provide.
A very special thank you to Ian for being such a wonderful inspiration for us all, what ever life deals you with, no matter your age – if you work hard for what you want to achieve, you can do it!
